Tight hamstrings is a conclusion, and the evidence usually offered for it is a forward fold that stopped short. A fold is the whole back of the body at once: hamstrings, calves, the lower back, the pelvis and whatever your nervous system decided to allow that morning. It cannot name the part that ran out.
Three tests can get closer, and the useful part is not any one of them. It is what it means when they disagree.
The short answer
- A fold that stops early is a reading about the whole posterior chain, not about hamstrings.
- Take three tests: a passive straight-leg raise, an active knee-extension test, and a seated against standing fold.
- If bending the knees releases the fold, the hamstring is implicated. If it does not, look at the lower back, the calves or the pelvis.
- Limb proportions move a sit-and-reach score on their own, before any tissue is involved.
- How stiff a body feels does not match how stiff it measures. That finding is well made and rarely repeated.

Tight hamstrings, or something else
Four different situations get filed under the same word.
Short tissue. The muscle-tendon unit does not lengthen as far as another person's. This is the one everybody assumes and the hardest to demonstrate from the outside.
Low tolerance. The tissue would go further; you stop before it does, because the sensation is unpleasant. This is what most six-week stretching gains appear to be.
Something else in the chain. A calf that will not lengthen stops a standing fold before a hamstring does. So does a lower back that will not flex, or a pelvis that will not rotate forward over the hip.
Proportions. A long torso and short arms cost you inches on a fold with nothing wrong anywhere.
They feel similar from the inside, and only the third and fourth can be told apart with any confidence at home. That is what the three tests are for.
Three tests, taken in order
Take all three in one sitting, warm or cold but the same both times, and write down what each one gave you.
One — the passive straight-leg raise. Lie on your back on the floor, both legs straight, and keep the other leg pressed flat. Loop a strap over one foot and pull that leg up, knee straight, until you feel a firm stretch behind the thigh. Note roughly how far past vertical, or short of it, the leg reached, and note what stopped it: a pull behind the thigh, a pinch at the front of the hip, or your other leg lifting off the floor. If the flat leg lifts, the reading is over — everything after that is pelvis, not hamstring.
Two — the active knee-extension test, sometimes called the 90/90. Lie on your back. Bring one hip to a right angle, thigh pointing straight up at the ceiling, and hold it there — a doorframe or your hands will do. Now straighten that knee as far as it will go while the thigh stays vertical. How far short of a straight leg you stop is your reading. This is the closest thing to an isolated hamstring test that needs no equipment, because a fixed hip angle takes the pelvis and the lower back out of the answer.
Three — the seated fold against the standing fold, both then repeated with the knees bent. Four readings, five minutes. The comparison is the point, not any single number.
What each disagreement means
Now put them side by side. Each mismatch says something the fold alone could not.

Bending the knees is the single most informative thing on this page. It takes the hamstring out of the movement and leaves everything else in. If the fingers drop several inches the moment the knees soften, the hamstring was holding you. If they barely move, it was not, and six weeks of hamstring work will buy you very little.
The standing-against-seated comparison catches the calf. Standing loads the calf and asks for balance; sitting does neither. A standing fold that is far worse than the seated one is often an ankle, and the knee-to-wall test will tell you in centimetres in about a minute. What the measurement work says
Four findings, and they are all about the instrument rather than about you.
Mayorga-Vega and colleagues meta-analysed the sit-and-reach family in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine in 2014 and reported moderate validity for hamstring extensibility and low validity for lumbar extensibility. A fold is a fair proxy for one thing and a poor proxy for the other, in the same movement, at the same moment.
Hoeger and Hopkins, in Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport in 1992, showed that limb proportions shift a sit-and-reach score by themselves. Arm length relative to leg length changes where your fingers land with no tissue involved. That is exactly why a modified version of the test exists at all — the modification sets a personal zero so that the score is a change from your own reach rather than a comparison with someone built differently.
Gajdosik and Bohannon reviewed the reliability of clinical range measurement in Physical Therapy in 1987, and the pattern they described still applies to anything you do at home: the same person measuring twice is reasonably consistent, and two different people measuring the same joint agree much less well. Practically — be the same measurer, at the same time of day, in the same room.
Grade: reasonably solid for the instrument's limits, moderate for what a fold reads. These are careful, replicated measurement studies. They tell you what the number is worth, which is more than most stretching research does.
How stiff it feels is separate
The most uncomfortable finding on this page is Stanton and colleagues, in Scientific Reports in 2017, who compared how stiff people's backs felt with how stiff those backs measured under an applied force. The two did not match. People who reported feeling stiff were not measurably stiffer; what they were was better at detecting the force applied to them.
Grade: moderate, and it goes against the whole premise of self-report. One region, one set of experiments. But the direction is clear and it is the direction nobody wants: the sensation of tightness is a perception, and it is not a measurement.
The practical consequence is blunt. Feeling tight is a real experience and a poor test. If you want to know whether something changed, you have to measure it, in a repeatable position, and write the number down.
And where the sensation is pain rather than tightness: pain that persists, wakes you at night, radiates into a limb, comes with numbness or weakness, or followed a fall or an injury is a matter for a clinician who can examine you. Nothing here diagnoses anything and nothing here is treatment.
What our own test cannot see
The toe touch test is Limber's posterior-chain reading, and it has the same problem as every other fold. Being honest about it is cheaper than being caught.
It has five bands: more than 20 cm from the floor reads 10, fingertips to the shins 35, fingertips to the floor 60, knuckles to the floor 75, palms flat 95. The gaps between those anchors are 25, 25, 15 and 20 points, so the smallest change the test can express is 15 to 25 points. Anything smaller is invisible. Improvement from the bottom of a band to the top of the same band reads as no change at all.
In the app, that one reading feeds two areas: the hamstrings in full, and half of the lower back, with the deep squat supplying the other half.

So the toe touch cannot separate the hamstring from the lower back — it feeds both — and the app labels the lower-back figure a proxy rather than calling it a measurement. That is the honest description of a fold: two areas, one number, one of them inferred.
The knee-to-wall is the only instrument in the battery that reports a real measured length, which is why it is the one worth taking alongside the fold.
Where to start
Take the three tests today and write down five things: the straight-leg raise on both sides, the knee-extension reading on both sides, and whether bending the knees released the fold. That last one, for most people, decides the whole plan.

If the standing version is much worse, the ankle is a good suspect, and the knee-to-wall test will give you a figure in centimetres. Fear of falling forward accounts for a surprising share of the difference too.
Does feeling tight mean I am tight?
Not reliably. When researchers compared how stiff people's backs felt with how stiff they measured under an applied force, the two did not match; the people reporting stiffness were more sensitive to the force rather than more stiff. Treat the sensation as information about your perception and measure the range separately.
Is one hamstring meant to be tighter than the other?
Side differences are the usual finding, not the exception, and most of them are unremarkable. What matters is whether the gap repeats across separate measuring sessions and whether it is larger than the error in your own measuring. A single-leg test is the only kind that can show a gap at all, since a fold reports one number for both legs.
How long before a hamstring reading changes?
The trials that established the dose ran six weeks, so six weeks is a reasonable interval before expecting anything. Limber treats a reading over 21 days old as stale, and its default re-test interval is 21 days — often enough to catch a trend, seldom enough that you are not simply re-reading noise. No date can be given for any particular result.
